UniProtKB description:  Transcriptional activator that functions by regulating chromatin structure (PubMed:7504178, PubMed:9241251, PubMed:8107823, PubMed:12815073, PubMed:15063171, PubMed:7935842, PubMed:28676122, PubMed:33720012). Overcomes the repressive effects of chromatin by promoting the open chromatin conformation in promoter gene regions, thereby allowing access to other transcription factors (PubMed:8107823, PubMed:26335634, PubMed:28676122, PubMed:33720012). Binds to DNA Polycomb response elements (PREs) at the bithorax complex and to the proximal region of the engrailed promoter, and positively regulates transcription of many genes including homeotic ones (PubMed:12815073, PubMed:12834867). Involved in zygotic genome activation (ZGA), a critical event in early embryonic development during which the developmental control passes from maternally provided mRNAs to the expression of the zygotic genome after fertilization (PubMed:26335634, PubMed:28676122, PubMed:33720012). Binds to the DNA sequence (GA)n, with optimal binding to the pentamer 5'-GAGAG-3' (PubMed:7504178, PubMed:9241251, PubMed:10347208, PubMed:12601174). Binds DNA as an oligomer (PubMed:7504178, PubMed:9241251, PubMed:10347208, PubMed:12601174). May also act as a transcriptional repressor, maintaining the repressed state of genes including lolal, and down-regulating its own transcription (PubMed:12200449). Required for dosage compensation in males and may be involved in oogenesis (PubMed:15020425). Also has a role in nuclear division (PubMed:8620838).
