Active on small alpha-keto acids such as 3-methyl-2-oxobutanoate, pyruvate, alpha-ketovalerate, and alpha-ketobutyrate; only uses acetyl-CoA (PubMed:16846242). Complements an E.coli deletion (PubMed:22352945).
