UniProtKB description: The chloroplastic ME isoform decarboxylates malate shuttled from neighboring mesophyll cells. The CO(2) released is then refixed by ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase. This pathway eliminates the photorespiratory loss of CO(2) that occurs in most plants.
